The Fool, The Satyr, The Sprite
This piece was meant to be the least embellished, but as such most freed piece. It is a play on the inspiration of Look 1, namely the ‘fairy’ inspiration, by drawing inspiration from fantasy’s more mischevious creatures, such as sprites or satyrs. The piece has the same overgrowth of felting and general colour scheme, but it loses the elegance of Look 1 in the place of playful gathered pants, and a top that is laced together out of itself. In short, it is Look 1, and the rest of the pieces, as they might’ve been freed from weight and restriction.
Shape & Silhouette:
This piece is inspired by low, draping silhouettes. The top is made of two layers of fabric, cut the same at the top as to fully finish itself, but cut different at the bottom to form two different trailing layers. The pants are low waisted and deceptively wide legged, gathered back into puffed couching, resembling a clown-ish gesture of playfulness and giving the cotton pants dimension.
Dyeing + Embellishment :
The top -
The top is made from a cotton and a cotton-rayon blend both dyed in black-walnut. The top layer was then embellished with felting using buckthorn dyed lace, undyed cotton scrim, and walnut dyed wool roving.
The pants -
The pants were made with a slight gradient of Black hollyhock dye to black-walnut dye, from the waist to hem respectively. The piece was then tie dyed with logwood to produce the purple dye. In an effort to help harmonize the colour, the entire sewn pant was then sadenned in an iron bath. The pants were smocked using a diamond smocking technique, and then were embroidered with floss in a repeating ‘+’ pattern in clusters.
